Designed in 1907 by architect Fran├žois Hemelsoet, this townhouse had undergone several transformations, adding layer upon layer, covering up the original beauty and structure. A thorough renovation was needed before we could begin to design forward. The process unfolded in an organic, dialectical way; while restoring the old elements, like the caryatids in the entrance hall, the stained glass and Carrara marble stairs, ideas and inspiration for new ones emerged.

To contrast with the restoration of the old, a freestanding stainless-steel kitchen element was inserted, barely blending in with its surroundings and contrasting with the natural shapes and colors showing through a large window that makes up the back facade, functioning as the frontier between garden and house. The bathroom was reinvented all together, adding white/orange terrazzo as a playful counterweight. Seen as the background of the users was in design, extra attention and effort was invested in the selection of colors and materials for details and finishing.
