House Zand

A young family in the rural Antwerp area of Zandhoven was looking to expand their residence. The additional space was to be comprised of a kitchen and adjoining dining area as an entry point to the rear garden. We fully embraced the notion of amplification by choosing perceivably robust materials.

From outside, the dining area is accessible through a very large sliding window door. Its volume and its thin profiles provide a broad view into the garden from the inside. The deep blue-green façade exterior is finished with rough, deeply grooved plaster that covers the thick walls. The solidity is reiterated by visibly dense canopies above the rear windows.

For the interior, we doubled down on the robustness by opting for a concrete ceiling molded by a wooden plank pattern and polished concrete floors. Finally, the kitchen worktop is made of natural stone. To tie both areas together with a touch of coziness, we used warm, contrasting stained wood for all window and door frames. Additionally, a large circular opening in the dining area’s ceiling lets in extra daylight.
